SUST Training: Wednesday 9 February 2011
The
Circle, Rockingham Lane, Sheffield
I went along to the two sessions to try to keep abreast of SUST training, and just to generally see how the training went. I was delighted. The trainers were Trish Staples and Terry Simpson, and I should have realised that the sessions would be both interesting and self-insightful. The contents of the sessions are below.
I have been trying to figure out a lot of stuff about my head for over 50 years, and I thought I was stymied. Oddly, both of these sessions opened up important things within me, triggering some very positive self-development which is still on-going. If you've not run across SUST (Sheffield User Survivor Trainers) before, you should seek them out (address below). Meanwhile, here were some trainee comments about the sessions:
Feedback from participants (see http://yourvoicesheffield.org/etc1/?p=77 )
"I didn't know what to expect and came away very pleasantly surprised, in a better frame of mind, and lifted mentally and spiritually."
"It was a very positive event. The trainers facilitated the groups well and the group members interacted well with each other. It was an enjoyable experience."
"Both of the trainers responded well to the constraints of the bitesize format and presented thought provoking and inspiring introductions to their subjects. I fully intend to follow up both subjects as a result of attending this course."
"I felt very involved. Before attending the course, I didn't realise that the potency of music could be such a vast and encompassing documentation of being ‘alive' and being ‘human'."
"Both trainers were excellent. I learned new stuff. Overall, I felt very, very positive about the event."
Everyone who attended the course rated it ‘good' or ‘excellent' overall. The majority of the participants would have liked the sessions to have been longer - SUST will explore the possibility of developing them as half-day or full day courses.
The session on Sub-personalities was facilitated by Trish Staples and the session on Music and Mental Health was facilitated by Terry Simpson. Brief session outlines follow:
Me,
Myself, I - Sub-personalities
All
of us have probably experienced feeling like different people at
different times (for example, it's unlikely that you talk to your
bank manger in the same way you would talk to a child). These
different ‘bits' of us, or sub-personalities,
are unconscious processes that have developed to enable us to cope
with different situations throughout our lives. Using a creative
approach, the purpose of this short introductory workshop is to
identify some of your own sub-personalities, allowing you to
recognise what drives you in your lives and what ‘bits' of you
conflict with other people.
Music
and Mental Health
We'll
look at different ways music can be used to enhance our mental
health, and consider some of the theory about why. This will be a
practical workshop, so we'll listen to some music and possibly try
and make some. No-one will have to do anything they don't want, but
it would be helpful if you could think about how music has helped
you, and be prepared to share that with others in the group.

Joining up
Self Directed Support - A ‘User Engagement' Project
-
Are you a
member of a ‘user-led' organisation or a self-help group?
-
Are you
receiving a personal or individual budget as part of Self Directed
Support?
-
Do you know
someone who you think should be getting some help to stay in their
own home?
If any of these
apply to you, then Jasmine Warwick at Voluntary Action Sheffield
would like to hear from you.
The way that Social
Services provide support is changing so that people who are eligible
to receive a service know how much money they have to meet their
needs and can choose how that money is spent. This is called Self
Directed Support. Jasmine is working on a project - funded by
Sheffield City Council - to join up ‘user-led' organisations
(groups led by the individuals who receive a service), self-advocacy
groups and self-help groups, with those people who are happy to talk
about their experience of receiving a Self Directed Support service.
The aim is that those groups will then be able to support people who
need help in the future. She particularly wants to talk to those
groups working with older people or with black and minority ethnic
communities.
If you'd like
Jasmine to come and talk to your group, if you can help in any other
way, or if you'd just like to find out more, then please contact
Jasmine at Voluntary Action Sheffield, tel: 0114 253 6647 or email:
j.warwick@vas.org.uk.
